Hey there,

as you most likely noticed we now added a Filler category, for …y’know, filler to be put into. That increases the categories shown on the frontpage to 5.

Can you still tell from a reader’s perspective what’s going on here? Or do we need to figure out a different display model for all this stuff on the frontpage? (Putting posts into spoilers? Or “more after the break”?)

PS: A archive for GenCrawl is in the making, as soon as i can nudge AJ to actually do it. (He has experience with this stuff by now. ;) )

  1. I’m not seeing a problem but if there is maybe have filler and page news not show up on the front page after a week or two?

  2. Could someone point me in the direction of this filler category? I appear to be blind.

    • When you’re on the top page, it has the latest of each category of News, Main Comic, Showdown, GenCrawl and now Filler. It’s not in the sidebar, it’s the last category.

As for an actual suggestion, perhaps have a preview of each category and then display the full when you go to that page? Which I suppose would be supporting the ‘More after the break’ option. It doesn’t overly affect how I use the site, as I mostly use the RSS and Sidebar for my navigation, I didn’t even know about how the Front Page was arranged till I went there just now to look. *embarrassed*

      • Speaking of sidebar… added it.

I also added the “more below the fold” tag to the filler post, just to see how that looks.

  3. The basic model is solid, but could use some tweaking.

Since there’s so many stories going on at once here, it may be wise to change the “Most recent Updates” to “Most recent Gengame” or something like that, to demonstrate it as the main story (maybe label the main Archive as “Gengame Archive” or something, too).

Also, under each “Most recent” you have 7 entries. This was fine when you had a lot of space you needed to fill on the sidebar, but now space is at a premium, so maybe 4 or 5 entries would be a better bet.

The Information and Related sections should also be combined, in my opinion.

And is it really necessary to label the shift? Yes, I know it’s important for what it means to the story, but do we really need a specific bookmark for it outside of the archive?

I think I might try to help with the Gencrawl archive, since I helped with the other two. I’ll put my work on the wiki.

  4. If we’re gonna put the “shift” link in the archive, should the top of the archive have a note to new readers that they might wanna read the original GiTP thread first and then have a link to the shift there above the chapter list? Probably would save a lot of confusion to people our new folk, given how influential the GiTP threads were to GenGame’s evolution.

    • Hm, difficult to say. I can’t tell just how interested people would be in reading all the commands and potential discussions. I suspect many just want to follow the story itself and not bother with any commands.

  5. It is a little confusing. My concern is mainly that each section doesn’t really have any kind of header (the bit that explains what section it is is quite small and in pale grey), so I got a little confused and thought that they were a series of blog-style updates to the same thing at one point.
